The ESL/Bilingual Education Program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction is one of the largest and most esteemed providers of the courses leading to the Illinois approvals in teaching ESL and Bilingual Education. This graduate level coursework, in turn, can be used by students who wish to continue on for a Master’s Degree or Certificate of Advanced Study in Curriculum and Instruction, with a focus on ESL and/or Bilingual Education. Program Faculty serve simultaneously as experts in second language acquisition and its related disciplines and as members of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

 

 

 

The candidate will be expected to deliver ESL and Bilingual Education approval coursework at sites around Chicagoland and northern Illinois.  In addition, the candidate will actively participate in programmatic, departmental, college, and university initiatives.

 

 

 

We seek a colleague with an earned doctorate in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, ESL or bilingual education or a closely related field.  The candidate should have a plan for active scholarship and research and demonstrate knowledge of standards-based assessment, a commitment to diversity, and the ability to use technology to enhance student learning.  Other valued qualities include teaching experience in a K-12 ESL/BE setting, experience teaching graduate students in ESL and bilingual education, a history of successful grantwriting or administration, demonstrated leadership ability, and bilingualism/biliteracy.  

 

The position requires automobile travel to meetings and teaching locations throughout the Chicagoland area and Northern Illinois.  Teaching is in the evening or on Saturdays.  Some responsibilities may occur during quarter breaks.
